Ode to Boredom

performance, Rijksmuseum Twente, Enschede

The performance Ode to Boredom was created at the invitation of the Rijksmuseum Twente. The work is inspired on a painting from the museum collection; Girl in a White Kimono by Hendrik Georg Breitner (1894). Mariëlle Videler asked a group of young women to spend five days in the exhibition space. They lounge on pedestals painted the same grey colour as their clothes. Each performer was given a ‘galaxy of words’ that they occasionally murmured or sang in space. The performers' clothes, copies of their personal favourite clothes in a fabric printed with tiny glass beads that form a reflective pattern, are part of Videler's Tinder Touch project.
