"But where Dürer’s Stag Beetle appears alone, Videler’s fantasy creatures crawl in large numbers. More than half a millennium after the very first insect artwork, the creatures no longer have to settle for a modest role in art." (Volkskrant, 2025)
For artist Mariëlle Videler (1970), 'being' means making the world. At the heart of her artistic path resides a love for life in all its forms, and a drive to create openings into existence where humans and non-humans meet as kin. Her practice is interdisciplinary. She works with a wide range of materials and material research, blending concept, philosophy, process and tool — always searching for ways to shape life through the lens of imagination.
Videler contributes to weaving new myths: stories that can guide us through an age shaped by power, possession and technology. Her work is a sensory search for consciousness and physical presence. She longs to live an embodied life, one that recognizes how deeply we depend on each other and on the world around us.
Through drawings, patterns, textile, video, language and performances, she gives shape to the strength and vulnerability that connect all forms of life with each other — plants, birds, humans, insects, rivers...
