The idea for Bird Bath originated from a simple question: what do small birds need in the city, and what makes their hearts beat faster?

Water, it turns out, is hard for them to come by in an urban environment. Videler researched the history of bird protection, in which women played a vital role, and found inspiration in an object from the Amsterdam Museum's collection: a historical scale model of an animal fountain. At the end of the nineteenth century, the Sophia Society for the Protection of Animals placed these cast-iron fountains at fifteen locations across Amsterdam.

Drawing on this history, she developed a microclimate on her balcony — three different birdbath models, a bush on wheels, grass, and branches offering vantage points for the wary visitors.
